Do you really believe you have the power to do anything? Some of us, when reading this question will likely answer ‘no’. We start questioning our potential and perhaps figure that the word ‘anything’ is too broad and therefore it’s impossible to even fathom.
Let me break it down for you. In one day alone there are 24 hours, 1,440 minutes, or if we want to get really specific, there are in fact 86,400 seconds. Now that we have these figures in front of us, let me now say this…We, alongside the world’s greatest innovators, possess the same amount of hours in a day. Now you’re probably saying to yourself, ‘I’m not an innovator.’ If this is you, my response is simply this, ‘Well, perhaps not yet’.
It’s very easy to get hung up on the BIG picture. We fall into the trap of putting too much emphasis on the end goal. When this happens, the finish line is perceived to be so great, we feel we can’t manage it. So instead of putting our passion into action, we just sit and watch the world go by.
Let me be honest and say that I’m speaking purely from experience. I, like you have aspirations. Almost every night I go to bed literally dreaming about my BIG dream! I’m generally a pretty positive person, so when it comes to getting excited, it’s like second nature. Despite my excitement, sometimes I would find myself getting anxious about the prospect of pursuing my dream because I simply didn’t know where to start. Due to my own perceived inexperience, I would try to delay me leaping on the idea until I thought the time was ‘right’. Newsflash! Timing isn’t everything.
Here comes an inspirational quote from Australian Olympian, Andrew Murphy: “You are only confined by the walls you surround yourself.” BOOM! [Insert lightbulb moment here.]
If you tell yourself that you can’t do something, you most likely will never do it. There’s a lot of power in the word. If you find yourself thinking this way, you have to literally start retraining your thought process. Start telling yourself that you do in fact have the potential, passion and drive to achieve each and every one of your dreams.
I am a very firm believer in this: NEVER EVER EVER let anybody make you believe that you are not good enough, smart enough or old enough to do something. There will always be individuals out there that feel that you aren’t capable. It’s a fact of life. Some people won’t understand your mission, others may deep down feel inferior to you. Whatever the situation, don’t let them get you down. Instead, turn their comments into fuel, and then use that fuel to empower your passion to defy their perceptions – just like Elphaba did in the musical, Wicked!
I’ve never let age define me. I am 24 years old and if I really think about it, I’ve achieved quite a bit for my age. I’m not trying to be cocky. I’m just taking the time to sit down, look back on my life and give thanks. There is nothing wrong with doing this. In fact, I strongly encourage you to do the same. Realising all the good things in your life really puts things into perspective. My suggestion is for you to write down all the things you’re thankful for. When you’re feeling a little flat, refer back to your notes – it will help you understand that your life is actually pretty awesome.
For those who don’t know, I run my own boutique digital communications agency. I also dabble in a bit of radio and have a couple of exciting projects in the pipeline. I’m married to a wonderful guy (his name is Brendan) and I live in Melbourne. This is now. But I have had quite an adventure, some of which I’ve spoken of in the ‘About Me‘ and ‘My Media‘ pages on my site. There is a lot more to my story, but I’ll save that for another day. I have learnt that it’s definitely reasonable to think that we have the power to do anything. We can’t necessarily achieve all our goals overnight, but we can certainly write our goals down, set reasonable timelines and we can most definitely take the first steps required to get the ball rolling.
You have 24 hours disposable to you each day. How will you make them count?
Keep smiling,
Gianna Lucas xx
